Case Study
Two-stage ambient temperature lagoon cover digester system with methane flare and emission reduction credit monitoring for a multi-generation dairy.
The Challenge
Fessenden Dairy, farming since 1863 with 650 milking cows and 550 heifers, collected manure waste in an earthen lagoon. This caused unpleasant odors, collected weed seeds, and emitted harmful greenhouse gases. The family needed a solution to reduce environmental impact while becoming more sustainable.
Our Approach
EFI fabricated and installed a two-stage anaerobic lagoon cover system using 60 mil Coverflex HDPE. The system includes cover ballast weight systems, biogas collection infrastructure, and a flare with monitoring system that records emission reduction credits. Financed through Environmental Credit Corp. with a $1 million Conservation Innovation Grant from USDA NRCS.
Outcomes
“Our family has been farming since 1863 and this was one of the best investments we've made. The odors are gone and the emission credits provide real value.”
