Case Study
A landmark waste-to-energy project that made a major palm oil plantation 100% energy self-sufficient, generating 2 MW of continuous power from biogas while earning 37,370 certified carbon credits annually.
The Challenge
Grupo Hame's Olmeca III palm oil processing facility in Tecun Uman processes 720 tons of fruit daily, generating over 1,000 m3 of wastewater per day. The untreated effluent created significant environmental liability, and the plantation depended entirely on grid electricity for its massive processing operations.
Our Approach
EFI fabricated and installed anaerobic lagoon covers and a biogas collection system using 60 and 80 mil HDPE manufactured by Polyex S.A. The system captures 24,000 m3 of biogas per day at 54-65% methane concentration, feeding generators that produce 2 MW of continuous electrical power. A monitoring system tracks biogas collected and converts measurements to CO2 equivalent for carbon credit verification.

Outcomes
“The biogas system transformed our plantation from an environmental liability into a showcase for sustainable palm oil production, generating all our own power while earning carbon credits.”
