Case Study
Innovative two-stage digestion system utilizing three existing lagoons for dairy manure-to-energy conversion.
The Challenge
Pacific Rim Dairy owner Greg te Velde had been interested in anaerobic digestion since the Cap and Trade movement around 2010 but had concerns about system durability. California Air Quality regulators approved anaerobic digestion but restricted NOx emissions from generator sets. The project needed to make good use of three existing lagoons rather than building new infrastructure.
Our Approach
Dr. Hector Cumba designed an innovative two-stage digestion process utilizing all three existing lagoons. EFI installed baffle and mixing systems, HDPE cover systems, and air injection systems for biogas conditioning across all three lagoons. Project developed by Maas Energy Works with civil design by 4-Creeks Inc.
Outcomes
“Dr. Cumba's clever process design made use of our three existing lagoons instead of building new ones. That saved us significant capital while maximizing biogas production.”
