Dairy manure-to-energy digester system converting cow waste to electricity for the Sacramento Municipal Utility District grid.
The Challenge
SMUD's Dairy Digester Incentives Program aimed to encourage on-farm electricity production via power purchase agreements. VanWarmerdam Dairy, with 1,200 milking cows, needed an efficient anaerobic digestion system that could reliably produce biogas for electricity generation while being economical to operate.
Our Approach
EFI installed a baffle and mixing system to increase biogas production, a High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) cover system with two days of biogas storage capacity, and an air injection system for H2S removal and biogas conditioning. Process design by Dr. Hector Cumba ensured efficiency and economy. Project developed by Maas Energy Works under SMUD's incentive program.
