Case Study
ThermaFab clearwell baffle system to increase chlorine contact time and meet water treatment requirements in a space-constrained facility.
The Challenge
The City of Orangeburg's Water Treatment Plant needed a new potable water clearwell tank to meet increased demand and chlorine contact time requirements. Because of the lack of available land at the existing treatment plant, a smaller tank with baffles was recommended to minimize costs while maximizing the amount of drinking water treated.
Our Approach
ThermaFab designed and installed five baffles, each 150' x 17' in size, in the clearwell tank. The baffles significantly increased the amount of drinking water treated in the smaller tank by extending the flow path and chlorine contact time. The material selected was 8130 XR-5 PW manufactured by Seaman Corporation, chosen for its high strength and proven record in potable water applications. The baffles were fabricated at ThermaFab's facility and installed on-site to meet the construction schedule.
Outcomes
“The baffle system let us meet our chlorine contact time requirements without building a larger tank. That saved the city significant money on land acquisition and construction costs.”
