Why is condensate management critical for covered lagoon systems?

Biogas produced in covered lagoons is saturated with moisture that condenses in collection piping as it cools. Without continuous condensate removal, piping blockages can disrupt gas flow to flares or energy equipment, cause dangerous pressure buildup under the cover, and lead to equipment corrosion. Proper condensate management ensures reliable, uninterrupted biogas handling.

How do the drip traps prevent gas escape during condensate removal?

EFI uses Varec rotating disc drip traps (Figure No. 246) placed at all low points in the biogas piping system. The design ensures that when the gas connection is open, the drain is automatically closed, and vice versa. This prevents biogas from escaping to atmosphere during condensate removal. Timer-controlled automatic models (Model 246 AT) are also available.

How does sludge removal work under a floating cover?

Draw-off pipes installed across the entire digester floor connect to the berm for high-solids pump attachment. For standard sludge, connect the pump suction and withdraw. If sludge is too thick to pump, reverse the system: pump low-solids water from the upper zone into the draw-off pipe to fluidize the thickened sludge, then reverse and withdraw. Sludge is typically applied to cropland at agronomic rates.

What maintenance do P-traps require?

P-traps (moisture separators) must remain full of water at all times. A low water level allows biogas to vent through the drain line to atmosphere. Daily checks should verify that P-trap valves are open and the moisture separator is filled with water and overflowing. This is one of the most critical daily maintenance items for covered lagoon systems.

What PE pipe sizes are used for biogas piping?

Common gas piping sizes are 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 inch HDPE (Performance Pipe Municipal & Industrial Series per PPI TR-7). Pressure ratings at 73F range from 50 PSI (DR 32.5) to 255 PSI (DR 7.3). Note that ratings are for water at 73.4F — for biogas and other fluids at different temperatures, ratings may differ.
