Case Study
LCFS-pathway covered lagoon digester for dairy methane capture at a 4,500-head operation, generating California Low Carbon Fuel Standard credits through verified methane destruction.
The Challenge
Ameresco developed a dairy biogas project at a 4,500-head dairy in Tulare County targeting California's LCFS credit market. The project needed a covered lagoon digester that would meet CARB's rigorous monitoring and verification requirements for LCFS pathway certification. The CI score calculation demanded precise methane capture data with continuous monitoring and third-party verification protocols built into the system design.
Our Approach
EFI installed a covered lagoon digester with 60mil HDPE geomembrane, continuous gas flow monitoring, and CARB-compliant data logging for LCFS verification. The system captures dairy manure methane and routes it through biogas conditioning equipment before delivery to a pipeline injection point. All monitoring infrastructure was designed to meet LCFS pathway verification requirements from day one.
Outcomes
“LCFS credit values depend entirely on verified data. EFI built the monitoring infrastructure that CARB requires right into the digester system — no retrofitting, no delays to certification.”
