Case Study
Three floating covers on 4-million-gallon bioreactor tanks plus HDPE biofilter liner for one of the Caribbean's largest rum distilleries, engineered for hurricane conditions.
The Challenge
Biothane/Veolia Water selected EFI to install floating covers on three massive bioreactor tanks at the Diageo rum distillery on St. Croix. The 12-million-gallon total capacity system needed to withstand Caribbean hurricane conditions with sustained winds exceeding 150 mph. The remote island location added significant logistical complexity for materials, equipment, and crew mobilization.
Our Approach
EFI installed three Seaman Corp 8138 XR5 floating covers on the 4-million-gallon bioreactor tanks along with an HDPE biofilter liner. The XR5 material was selected for its superior UV resistance and tensile strength in tropical marine environments. All anchor and ballast systems were engineered to withstand Category 5 hurricane forces, and the installation was completed during the narrow weather window between hurricane seasons.
Outcomes
“Installing floating covers in a Caribbean hurricane zone required a contractor who understood extreme weather engineering. EFI delivered covers that have survived multiple hurricane seasons without a single failure.”
