Case Study
Innovative permeable cover system with three floating baffles creating anaerobic and multi-stage aerobic treatment cells, using patented 3R Foam technology.
The Challenge
Cavenaugh Hog Farm's lagoon system in Wallace, NC needed an advanced treatment solution to address odor complaints and nutrient management concerns. Traditional covered lagoon approaches would simply contain the problem; the facility needed a system that would actively improve wastewater treatment quality by creating distinct treatment zones within the existing lagoon infrastructure.
Our Approach
EFI installed a 74,000 SF permeable cover using patented 15mm 3R Foam cover material (US Patent 6,558,548) combined with three floating baffles made from 30mil XR-5. The baffles divide the lagoon into distinct anaerobic, primary aerobic, secondary aerobic, and tertiary aerobic treatment cells, creating a multi-stage treatment process within a single lagoon footprint.
Outcomes
“The baffle system turned our single lagoon into what's essentially a four-stage treatment plant. The odor reduction was immediate and the water quality improvement exceeded what our engineers thought was possible.”
