The Challenge
Problem
The farm's single open manure lagoon retained increasing nutrient levels. The owner and regulators were concerned about whether the acreage available under the land-application permit could accommodate the wastewater volume and nutrient loads.
Our Approach
Solution
Environmental Fabrics, Inc. installed a 15 mm 3R Foam permeable cover over approximately one-fourth of the lagoon and three floating baffles made from 30 mil XR-5. The layout divided the lagoon into one anaerobic and three aerobic treatment cells. The cover measured 74,000 square feet; the baffles measured 250 by 10 feet, 217 by 10 feet, and 182 by 10 feet. The case history records EFI's geosynthetic installation from May to June 2003, completed on schedule. It separately identifies aeration and biological-treatment components supplied by other companies.
