Case Study
307,661 SF permeable cover with floating baffle that solved a persistent algae blooming problem, dramatically improving raw water quality for municipal supply.
The Challenge
Johnston County's raw water reservoir was experiencing severe algae blooming that degraded water quality and increased treatment costs at the downstream water treatment plant. The algae growth was driven by sunlight penetration into the nutrient-rich reservoir water, and conventional chemical treatment was proving both expensive and only temporarily effective.
Our Approach
EFI installed a 307,661 SF permeable cover using 15mm 3R Foam material that blocks sunlight penetration while allowing rainwater through. A floating baffle was added to improve hydraulic flow patterns and reduce short-circuiting. The cover eliminates the photosynthesis that drives algae growth while maintaining the reservoir's function as a raw water supply.
Outcomes
“We'd been fighting algae for years with chemicals and nothing worked long-term. The EFI cover solved it completely — our water quality data improved within weeks. It was the most effective infrastructure investment the county has made.”
