Case Study
Swine lagoon cover and biogas collection system for Duplin County hog farms, generating carbon credits through verified methane destruction.
The Challenge
Farmergy developed a swine biogas aggregation project across multiple hog farms in Duplin County, North Carolina — one of the most concentrated swine production regions in the US. Open lagoons at these farms were collectively emitting over 25,000 tCO2e annually. The project needed cost-effective lagoon covers and biogas collection that could generate verified carbon credits while navigating North Carolina's complex swine waste regulations.
Our Approach
EFI installed HDPE lagoon covers with integrated biogas collection headers and enclosed flares across the Farmergy farm network. Each installation was designed to meet North Carolina's swine waste management plan requirements while providing the continuous monitoring data needed for carbon credit verification. The biogas collection infrastructure was designed for potential future upgrade to pipeline-quality RNG.
Outcomes
“Duplin County is ground zero for swine waste regulation. EFI understood the compliance landscape and built systems that satisfy regulators while generating the carbon credit data our investors require.”
