EFI fabricated and installed anaerobic lagoon covers and a biogas system for Grupo Hame's Olmeca III palm oil mill in Tecún Umán, Guatemala. The historical case study identifies a two-digester project in June 2009.
Historical scope checked against EFI's Grupo Olmeca case study, headed June 2009 and preserved in the 2014 case-study collection. The UNFCCC registry separately identifies Olmeca III as CDM project 2667 in Guatemala. Estimated annual carbon credits, historical output and present operating performance are different claims; no current output or annual credit issuance is asserted here.

The Challenge
Problem
Palm oil mill effluent was a source of odors and methane emissions. The mill's wastewater project used anaerobic digestion to collect biogas for electricity generation. The case study reports a mill throughput of 720 tons of fruit and a wastewater flow of 1,000 cubic meters per day at the time of the project.
Our Approach
Solution
EFI's documented work was fabrication and installation of the covers and biogas system. The lagoon covers used 60 and 80 mil HDPE manufactured by Polyex S.A. The case study identifies Consorcio Ingeniería Ambiental Mexicana CIAM / Bunge Emissions Group as project engineers. Biogas was routed to engine-generator sets, with excess gas sent to a flare. The historical account reports approximately 2 MW of continuous electrical output and 24,000 cubic meters of biogas per day; these figures describe that account rather than a current operating measurement.
