Case Study
Palm oil mill waste-to-energy biogas system generating 2MW continuous power and 37,370 CER carbon credits annually from 720 tons of fruit processing per day.
The Challenge
Grupo Olmeca's palm oil mill in Tecun Uman processed 720 tons of fruit daily, generating 1,000 cubic meters of high-strength wastewater per day. The mill needed a waste-to-energy solution that would treat the effluent, generate on-site power to reduce grid dependence, and qualify for international carbon credits under the Clean Development Mechanism.
Our Approach
EFI designed and installed a comprehensive biogas capture and power generation system. The system captures 24,000 cubic meters of biogas per day from palm oil mill effluent treatment, feeding a 2MW continuous power generation system. The project achieved CDM registration, generating 37,370 CER carbon credits annually while enabling 100% plantation energy sustainability.

Outcomes
“The biogas system eliminated our dependence on grid power entirely and turned our biggest waste stream into our most valuable asset. The carbon credit revenue alone justified the investment within the first year.”
