Case Study
Lagoon cover and methane capture system for one of the largest hog operations in the United States, addressing regulatory pressure on swine waste management in North Carolina.
The Challenge
Murphy Brown, the hog production subsidiary of Smithfield Foods, faced mounting regulatory and public pressure over open lagoon waste management at its North Carolina operations. As one of the largest hog producers in the US, the company needed a proven methane capture solution that could be deployed across its lagoon systems while demonstrating environmental responsibility to regulators and the surrounding community.
Our Approach
EFI installed a lagoon cover and methane capture system designed for the high-volume swine waste lagoons. The cover system captures methane that would otherwise vent to atmosphere, while the enclosed destruction system ensures high-efficiency methane elimination. The project served as a demonstration for Smithfield's broader environmental compliance strategy across its North Carolina operations.
Outcomes
“We needed a partner who could work at the scale of our operations and deliver a system that regulators would accept. EFI understood both the engineering and the regulatory landscape.”
