Case Study
Double-lined landfill containment system with leachate collection for Republic Services' Ada County municipal solid waste facility, one of the largest landfill liner projects in the Mountain West.
The Challenge
Republic Services needed to construct a new landfill cell at their Ada County facility to meet Boise's growing waste disposal needs. Idaho DEQ required a double composite liner system with leak detection and leachate collection engineered for the site's high water table and basalt substrate. The volcanic geology presented unique anchor trench challenges that standard landfill construction methods couldn't address.
Our Approach
EFI installed a double composite liner system consisting of 80mil HDPE primary and secondary liners with GCL, geocomposite drainage layer, and a leachate collection system. Custom anchor trench designs were engineered for the basalt substrate, and the drainage layer was oversized to accommodate the site's elevated groundwater conditions. Total liner coverage exceeded 1.8 million SF across the cell footprint.
Outcomes
“The basalt geology at this site had stumped two other contractors. EFI's anchor trench engineering solved the problem and their QA program gave us the documentation Idaho DEQ required.”
