Case Study
Secondary containment liner retrofit for above-ground chemical storage tanks, stopping groundwater leakage from deteriorated concrete.
The Challenge
Westvaco Chemical's above-ground storage tanks had existing concrete secondary containment that had deteriorated over the years, allowing leakage into groundwater. The project required placing a secondary containment liner over the existing concrete around tanks, piping supports, and containment walls — all without interrupting plant operations.
Our Approach
EFI installed Seaman 8130 XR-5 geomembrane liner, selected for its excellent chemical resistance and UV properties, over an 8 oz. nonwoven geotextile cushion. The geotextile and liner were sealed to concrete tank bases and walls using stainless steel batten strips with gaskets and anchor bolts. Seaman Tuff-Trac walkways were welded to the liner surface for equipment access within the containment area.
Outcomes
“The XR-5 liner system stopped all groundwater leakage from our deteriorated concrete containment, and EFI did it without shutting down our plant for a single day.”
