Case Study
Covered equalization cells with floating HDPE covers for a turkey processing plant's wastewater treatment improvements.
The Challenge
The on-site wastewater treatment plant for this turkey processing facility was operating erratically due to intake of two separate waste streams with varying flow rates. Plant operators could not meet discharge limits, and odor from uncovered basins was a growing concern.
Our Approach
EFI installed two covered equalization cells lined with 60 mil HDPE geomembrane to prevent groundwater contamination. The floating cover system, constructed of 100 mil HDPE with a ballast weight system, captures odors and emissions while accommodating level fluctuations from full to near-empty. The cells blend wastewater streams before main treatment, increasing retention time and allowing anaerobic pretreatment and FOG separation.
Outcomes
“The covered equalization cells transformed our wastewater treatment. We went from missing discharge limits to full compliance, and the odor issues are completely gone.”
