Case Study
Covered anaerobic treatment cell for an animal by-product processing plant, eliminating odor complaints and achieving discharge compliance.
The Challenge
The on-site wastewater treatment plant for this animal by-product processing facility was overloaded due to increased production. The city was receiving odor complaints and plant operators could not stay within discharge limits. A solution was needed to reduce the load on the existing treatment plant while eliminating odor issues.
Our Approach
EFI installed a covered anaerobic treatment cell using 60 mil HDPE liner and an insulated cover to seal the cell. The cover improves the anaerobic process, captures methane, and prevents the escape of odors. The cell serves as pretreatment for the wastewater, substantially reducing the load on the existing treatment plant. The plant is located near a river, requiring the liner to prevent groundwater contamination.
Outcomes
“The covered anaerobic cell solved two problems at once — we're within discharge limits now and the city stopped getting odor complaints from residents.”
